How long does it take to install hardwood floors?

Now that you’ve chosen the perfect hardwood floor for your home, you may be wondering what exactly happens next. How much time would it take to get my new hardwood floor installed? A commonly asked question by most of our clients, especially when deadlines are attached to the project.

Hardwood floor installation time frame varies across projects. One important factor to be considered while calculating the duration of your new hardwood floor would be whether you are installing pre-finished hardwood or unfinished hardwood. In a general scenario, a prefinished hardwood floor would take time to be shipped to the job site, but can be installed quickly compared to an unfinished hardwood floor. Whereas an unfinished hardwood floor can be shipped quickly to the job site, but would take longer to install due to the drying period involved in the process.

Time required to install prefinished hardwood floor:

  • A prefinished hardwood catalog product usually takes 2-3 days to arrive at the job site. A custom made product manufactured as per the given specifications may take a bit longer to arrive.
  • Hardwood flooring material needs to acclimate (adjust) to the moisture and temperature conditions of the installation environment for at least three days (72 hours) before it can be installed.

The acclimation period varies across products, ranging from 1 day to 5 days depending on the species of wood and from the place of source.  Improper acclimation can result in the shrinking of individual boards leaving gaps between the boards, or the boards can expand leading to cupping.

  • Prefinished hardwood floor installation will often take 2-4 days depending on the scope of work. In case of installations at challenging art forms like curved walls, stone hearth, decorative border or installations with high detail work to accomplish may take a bit longer than usual.
  • Floor preparation and old floor ripping can add extra installation time. Ripping of carpet floors can be done on the same day, whereas tile rip off can take an entire day.
  • After the completion of hardwood floor installation, there are some trim work involved, which is either adding in shoe molding or base molding or even at time replacing the existing base molding. This process might also require some time, adding into the required installation time for your prefinished hardwood floor.

Therefore the total installation time required for a 1000sf area or less would be typically = 6 – 8 days for the above listed installation process.

Time required to install unfinished hardwood floor:

  • Usually an unfinished catalogue product takes 2-3 days to arrive at the job site. In case of any special orders like extra wide planks, herringbone might take 2-3 days extra to arrive.

  • Installation time is similar to that of the prefinished hardwood products as mentioned above.
  • An extra process which gets added to unfinished hardwood floor is sanding & refinishing which can take 3-5 days depending on the scope of work like type of staining color used, number of coats of poly applied (assuming one coat per day) and humidity (humidity level plays and important role in refinishing. If the job site is very humid, it would take significantly longer time for the new finish to dry)
  • It is recommended that you let the stain dry for at least a day before you move the furniture or start with any activity in the room.

Therefore the total installation time required for a 1000sf area or less would be typically = 8 – 10 days for the above listed installation process.
